Miss Priss, DYI and FSBO's

We are in the Do It Yourself age. I will admit, I will do as much as I can myself as I hate to ask my already overburdened husband for help sometimes. We did do two flips last year and I realize where my ability ends and his takes over. I am not afraid to let someone else do some things for me. Case in point: Changing oil in the vehicle. I know it isn't rocket science but there are people who can do this, know what they are doing, and do it well. I am not one of those people.

Neither is my 18 year old granddaughter who decides that she will change her own oil. I have no idea how this worked out at this point in time, but I can already tell you that she, like myself, doesn't even own any oil changing clothes. And on top of that, having never done it before, can she do it? I am picturing oil all over this kid, in her hair, everywhere. I listened to the conversation that Bob was having with her telling her it is cheaper to have it done by a professional than to go out and buy everything she needs to do it.

Guess what, stubborn set in. She had already bought everything and was doing it herself. She called grandpa for last minute instructions. I heard him going through the instructions with alot of resignation in his voice. He was telling her how to do it, asking her where she is putting the old oil and etc. I just cringed.

There is a saying I enjoy, "You think hiring a professional is expensive, wait until you hire an amateur."

Yes, it can cost you more in the long run. What does this have to do with real estate? FSBO's. For Sale By Owners. Real estate isn't rocket science either, but having a professional working for you can save you alot of time, heartache and money. You can have your weekends off. You don't have strangers coming to your door to see your home, unannounced. You end up showing to alot of looky lou's because you are not in the buyer loop and you think that caller is serious. Do you know there are just nosey people out there? You've gone to all the effort to keep your house picked up and it is like open house for looky lous.

You can sell your property by yourself. It is done all the time. You could also defend yourself in a court of law without an attorney. You could change your own oil. You could roof your own house, you could do your own operation....yes, that is getting a little extreme.

Or, you could hire a professional to market your home or to assist you in the buying process.

Just sayin, we're here for you.
