Continuing education?

Sometimes people can be pretty disappointing. Maybe because our expectations are too high. I was attending a real estate class last week for my continuing education and the lady sitting next to me was "there for the hours", according to her. Well, so was I, but while I was there getting my "hours", I still wanted to learn something. I thought, surely she will pay attention and get something out of this class.

The class was Auctions 101 and it was very interesting to me. At three different times, the instructor told us to get in groups and come up with an answer to a question he asked. It was myself, Miss Hours, and a guy in front of me who wasn't actively selling real estate, just there to keep his license up. Inspirational people to be around. Anyway, during our first challenge we were to put our heads together and come up with an answer to his question. I am sure the reason was to get input from the class and some participation. First thing Miss Hours says is "I'm not really into this group thinking thing." I said "ok?". The guy in front of us just then turned back around and forgot about it.

I've never seen so much "give a hoot" displayed by professionals in my life. I know some classes can be sleepers, but you never know what you might hear from other's personal experiences that might benefit you and your business. It is like, I'm here, now don't try to teach me anything, I'm only here for the hours.

I wanted to ask Miss Hours what she did for a living, because I could tell she wasn't selling real estate with that attitude. She didn't seem like she was into people or even breathing regulary. Inhale, exhale, same old thing every day. I had to check my pulse every once in a while because I was afraid some of that "zombie" would rub off on me.

She did ask for my business card, I asked for hers as well, I was wanting to see if hers said something like "call me if you are interested in buying or selling and I may or may not get back to you." "Frankly, I don't care." But she didn't have her business cards with her. I wondered if she had bothered to order any.

I'm thinking, this is why some agents don't return my phone calls when need to show their properties. They're only there for the hours. Going to the office to read the paper or something, or to "play store". Gossip. Who knows.

Then there was this other lady who was there for some kind of recognition because I had her in a previous class and she thought she was the instructor. Asked questions off topic, tried to change the subject. I am thinking her broker sent her there to get her out of the office because she was driving her nuts. She had alot of stories that had little to do with the subject at hand, but she did her thing and got her attention.

I am so boring, I just sat there and listened to the instructor.  I think I learned some things too. I'm just thankful that we aren't doctors and we were there to brush up on brain surgery. I wonder how this agents buyers and sellers manage with this type of an agent.
